Make your own activated charcoal toothpaste at home

For the last year or so, we have been (irregularly) using activated charcoal toothpaste to help us remove any stains from our teeth. For those of you not familiar with activated charcoal, its usually made from coconut shell. It is similar to common charcoal, but is made especially for use as a medicine. To make activated charcoal, manufacturers heat common charcoal in the presence of a gas that causes the charcoal to develop lots of internal spaces or “pores.” These pores help activated charcoal “trap” chemicals. It can be used internally to help with stomach ailments as well as to cleanse the body, and we use it externally as toothpaste.

Usually activated charcoal comes in powder form. The main reason why I make this toothpaste is that I find dipping my toothbrush into the powder jar quite unhygienic and also inconvenient as the powder always splashes everywhere in the sink. You can imagine, charcoal being black it is not an easy to disguise mess! 🙂

How to make it:

1 part activated charcoal powder
1 part organic coconut oil, melted
peppermint or fennel essential oil (optional, to taste)

All you need to do is to incorporate the activated charcoal powder into the melted coconut oil and add the essential oil, if using any for flavour. To store it the best is to use a reusable squeeze tube or a little glass jar with a spatula for dispensing the amount needed for each brushing session. It is recommended to use only a few times a week as the over use can cause issues with yout teeth enamel, but I can see the results after using it a couple of times a week!
