Garlic bread rolls with vegan cheese

While these vegan cheese bread rolls are certainly not the healthiest of my recipes, I can guarantee you that they really hit the spot! Warm from the oven with the cheese melted inside and the garlicky flavour… ummmm just delicious. I love to make them to accompany any kind of casseroles because they really complement them and because they are super easy to make and can be prepped in advance, they also work to bring to friends dinner parties to simply bake while you are there.

The only tricky part here is to choose a good vegan cheese to use for the filling. Any filling works as well, so get wild and fill with any other things that you like. A black olive tapenade filling would also work wonderfully! on that note, I must try that myself 😉

So, back to making the rolls. You will need very basic ingredients:

500gr flour
350ml warm water
10gr quick yeast
10gr unrefined cane sugar (or similar)
10gr Himalayan salt
30gr vegan butter
vegan cheese for the filling

For the garlic butter, just vegan butter and garlic chopped very thinly or crushed.

(I barely use my stand alone mixer as I love mixing by hand, but its veeeeery useful to knead the dough in this recipe as it takes a while until the mixture is perfectly kneaded)

In the mixer bowl with the kneading attachment, place the warm water with the sugar and mix to dissolve, add the yeast ad let it rest for 5-10 minutes until the yeast gets active and a slight foam appears on top.

Then start adding the flour 1/2 cup at the time and let it mix in low in between. Once all the flour has been added, put the machine to work at medium speed until the mixture if starting to slap into the sides of the bowl.

Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it double in size. Depending on the room temperature it can take anything between 15 minutes to 1 hour to rise.

Once doubled, take the dough out of the bowl into a working surface with flour and make it a round, cut it in 4 parts and keep cutting the pieces until you have made 6 pieces out of each of the initial 4 parts (that makes 24 rolls). Roll each small piece around a square of cheese and place the balls straight into a baking tray. Once you have rolled all the 24 balls, use the kitchen towel from before to cover the tray and let it rest while your oven heats up to 180 degrees Celsius.

Once the oven is hot enough and your cheese balls have slightly risen on the tray, place them into the oven and cook until golden brown on top. Usually it takes around 15 minutes. Take them out of the oven and brush some melted vegan butter with the garlic on top and a sprinkle of Himalayan salt to serve. These vegan cheese bread rolls are best just out of the oven 🙂
